An F1 Goldendoodle is a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. The “F” stands for “first generation” since one or both of the parent dogs are purebred. With this first cross, these dogs are genetically 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever. The coat will vary along a spectrum from looking like a relaxed-curl poodle and a wavy coated Golden Retriever.
We have seen both types of coat, curly and wavy, in our F1 litters, our Amber has what we call "bed-head" or wavy curls. Most Goldendoodles either don't shed or shed slightly. Their hair will grow about 4-7 inches in length if left unclipped. A Goldendoodle's fur should not be clipped too short because the coat provides natural protection in heat and cold. Careful, daily brushing will prevent the matting that happens easily with this breed. People with mild allergies are OK with F1 Goldendoodle but most prefer an F1B Goldendoodle for allergy sufferers.
An F1b Goldendoodle is a cross between an F1 Goldendoodle and a purebred poodle. This is a "backcross" to the poodle in our case, which means 75% poodle and 25% golden retriever. This results in a generally curlier coat and even less shedding.
The Goldendoodle has become the best blend of purebred Golden Retrievers and Poodles, forming what is referred to as hybrid vigor. These are crossbred together and the resulting puppies tend to be healthier than either purebred parent. This is because purebred dogs tend to have more genetically transferred disorders (the most common being hip dysplasia, eye and thyroid issues), because in breeding dogs of the same breed, more recessive genes are passed along. Both our dogs have been DNA tested and are free of any genetic abnormality that can be seen in Golden Retrievers or Poodles. Additionally, our puppies have been bred and raised with a special curriculum for having the temperament for training as service dogs.
Goldendoodles are the perfect family pet. They get along well with children and crave human attention. They are quick to learn new things as they are eager to please their human friends. Goldendoodles should be exercised daily in some manner as they love to be active and can find mischief if bored or left alone for too long. Consistent grooming is also something to consider as their hair needs to be brushed and cut regularly to prevent matting and keep it soft. Grooming can be expensive! Fully grown, our standard sized Goldendoodles have an average shoulder height of 20-24 inches and weigh between 50-70 lbs.
